"If It's Bad, Make it Worse" Vocal Mix Tips - Matthew Weiss
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.17 часов назад
In today’s video, I want to share some brilliant insights from my friend Matthew Weiss on tackling a common issue in vocal recordings: too much reverberant “room sound.” We’ve all encountered this problem, where a vocal or audio source ends up sounding distant and muddy because it was captured in a less-than-ideal environment. Matthew, however, turns this challenge into an opportunity to create...

I love to tackle the finer details “in the box” using Pro Tools, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about handling the “global” elements on an analogue console. I own the LCD-5 headphones and they feel even lighter than their weight suggests. The premium materials 5:34 make them feel like you are getting your money's worth. Word of warning: If you are an 'audiophile' (yuck) and are afraid of EQ because you can't admit you don't understand it or don't know how to use it, I would skip these headphones (or most any Audeze). Audeze intended for these to be used with PEQ or filters. The stock sound out of the box is not tuned for consumer ears, they are tuned for technical prowess first, with the lowest possible distortion. If you are like me and understand how to use EQ and are not afraid of a little tinkering and testing for a few days to adjust the sound to your preference, these are the best headphones you can buy.

WOW! this was uploaded two years ago, and I'm mastering a project today where I totally needed this!!!! I've been using multistage limiting for years (where I use the first one just to lift the level but making sure there's absolutely NO reduction on the meter, and then using the second stage for the bulk of the heavy lifting, but it's never truly sounded great. NOW THIS!!!! This sounds so good! Who knew clipping could actually sound CLEANER in the end lol....such an awesome and timely video for me right now! Thanks so much!

Had you played me these mics in a mix, randomly switching between them without any indication, I would have been hard pressed to tell you that anything was different. Maybe the Lewitt stands out as brighter... However, again, if these were being switched without warning, I doubt I would notice.

I think the level may depend on what monitors you use... I remember we were in a studio with big wall monitors like Philip Newell or something like that... And it was loud, but at the same time quite comfortable... so nobody had to shout loudly

Donald Fagan's former backing band The Restless Age is currently making amazing music, but they are virtually ignored in the United States. They are getting wide acclaim in South Korea for their work on the Midnight Romance in Hagwon TV Series. It would be cool, Rick, if you would do an episode about them.

Warren: I realize that a large percentage of your RUclips viewers may be more interested in the latest monitors or plugins. However, thank you so much for doing this series of interviews with the innovators of music technology. While many may think of these people as techno-centric, what repeatedly emerges from these interviews is their common drive to find new ways of capturing the human emotional component of creating music. You are doing a great service to the musical world by conducting these interviews. Best wishes.

I've been sent all kinds of silly stuff over the years but my pet peve is people not naming things. Several times i've been sent a bunch of audio files with the 'names' 'Audio1, Audio2 etc. I just REFUSE to touch these things, if someone cannot be bothered to name things properly, let alone at all; then i can't be bothered to even listen to them... that's a HARD AND FAST rule for me.

I was thinking the same thing. Recently I was listening to a lot of old recordings like WW2 era even before that and the quality is often not very good compared to modern recordings but I think a lot of them sound better to listen to than a lot of modern recordings. The reason I think this is because of the energy and the performance that has been captured. They’ve captured jazz musicians at the height of their game giving an energetic performance and you can tell their heart is in it. Whereas a lot of modern recordings sound cold in comparison and in comparison sound like they’re just playing the notes and going through the motions. This is probably a better 1950s recording but I have a copy for the Glenn Miller Story Soundtrack. The sound on that record blows a lot of modern recordings I’ve heard out the water. The energy from the orchestra smacks you in face where other recordings just sound like an orchestra playing the notes. I’d rather listen to old recordings like that over the something that’s recorded with the most modern technology that’s over processed and just going through the motions any day.

I was crazy about Yes back in college but I was more crazy of the album art done by the great Roger Dean! Album art was crucial back then created to get and hold your imagination while listening to the album, which it did. Roger Dean, Peter Max and Marty Klarwein and Hignosis were the best back then.

Until everyone found out it was the winner,..they had heaped praises on it not knowing. Then suddenly a lot of people backtracked or made excuses for their vote. HAHAHA. I'll never forget it.
